Ny femsetare mot H/H
15 jan 2017
Derby matches normally have a lot of hype surrounding them. The crowds are bigger, the players compete harder, and winning a derby match carries an extra sense of accomplishment and prestige. Tonight’s match Falkenberg vs. Hylte/Halmstad held even more drama than a normal derby match. Hylte/Halmstad was out for revenge against Falkenberg who beat them for the Grand Prix title in Uppsala last weekend, and Falkenberg was surrounded in conflict the two days leading up to the match due to the federations decision to overturn Fayez’s Swedish player status. Tonight was more than a volleyball match, both teams had something bigger to prove.
FVBK 2-3 HH (25-22, 19-25, 23-25, 25-20, 8-15)
The intensity surrounding the match clearly effected the players during the first set. Both teams made multiple errors. Both teams had six serving misses and Hylte/Halmstad had six attacking errors. Johan Eriksson was able to give FVBK some much needed stability in serve receive against some very aggressive serves, and young setter Viktor Nielson continuously found openings for his attackers. The points were even until right at the end when Silva made some aggressive serves giving FVBK the lead 21-19 and the advantage to win the set 25-22.
Hylte/Halmstad played much better in the second set keeping their errors down and taking an early lead. Their hitting efficiency was much higher than FVBK’s and they won the set comfortably with 19-25.
FVBK however, was not ready to give up. This time Falkenberg took the early lead in the third set 7-4 due in part to Fayez and Silva’s attacking. FVBK was fighting hard, winning long rallies, and was ahead 22-19. Despite this overwhelming momentum FVBK ultimately lost the set due to five unforced errors 23-25.
The fourth set looked bad for FVBK as they continued to lose points with their own mistakes. Pedro had some big kills giving FVBK a small lead at 10-8, and FVBK finally seemed to find the court and their confidence again. The scores remained close until Hylte/Halmstad started to make mistakes, and Fayez continued to give FVBK points hitting hard cross court. FVBK was able to finish this set winning 25-20.
In the fifth and final set Viktor Lindberg came out on fire serving tough and getting some early kills for Hylte/Halmstad, causing FVBK to be behind 2-7. FVBK was unable to recover from such a crippling start and ended up losing the set 8-15 and the match 2-3.
The home team fought valiantly to extend the match to five sets, but it was also clear that the events of the previous days had taken its toll on the group. We hope for a positive decision regarding Fayez's future and look forward to the team growing stronger as they work together through this process.
