A derby match wrapped in controversy
14 jan 2017
On sunday a rematch of last week's Grand Prix Finals will take place in Falkhallen. It is a match that has suddenly been surrounded in controversy. This drama runs deeper than a heated rivalry between FVBK and Hylte/Halmstad, but also mirrors many of the modern day issues that are so relevant in Sweden and around the world. To get a deeper understanding of the issue at hand, please see the links below.
As many of you have seen in the media over the last couple days, Svensk Volleyboll informed Falkenbergs Volleybollklubb on friday afternoon that Fayez Alloush no longer counts as a swedish player. Regardless of your stand on the situation, that this decision came without warning in the middle of the season, without FVBK being given an opportunity to officially defend our stance AND on a friday before a match versus Hylte/Halmstad shows no respect for the GAME of volleyball. It clearly diminishes the preparation put in by players, coaches and members of our clubs. .
FVBK won the Grand Prix for the second year in a row and for the sixth time overall. The Gold match was a hotly contested five set battle and we look forward to meeting H/H in a rematch on sunday. FVBK were big underdogs in last week's finals, and due to the current circumstances are even bigger underdogs on sunday in Falkhallen. Unfortunately Christofer Lewin has a knee injury that will keep him from filling Fayez' role. Daniel Gruvaeus is currently in Poland with the junior national team.
How FVBK will reform the team on sunday is not yet clear. One thing that is clear however is that we will continue to fight for each other as a TEAM. The players were noticeably upset by friday's decision...upset for Fayez's sake as much or more than for how it affects the group.
Join us in Falkhallen on sunday to celebrate our recently crowned Grand Prix Champions as well as to show support for Fayez and Falkenbergs Volleybollklubb! This is a match you do not want to miss
