Comeback victory in 5 sets!
4 jan 2017
Tonight’s rollercoaster match FVBK vs ÖVK showed how difficult it is for teams to play after the holiday break. Both teams showed their top level, but also showed their very bottom. In the end the advantage went to the home team, and FVBK pulled out a 3-2 win.
FVBK 3-2 ÖVK (23-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-10, 15-8)
In the first set both teams came out playing aggressively, and the score remained close all the way until 19-19. Both teams had a slightly different starting lineup, FVBK started with Christofer Lewin as libero who had played the entire match versus Linköping when Johan Eriksson was out with an injury, and ÖVK rested Tomas Vilimas their top scoring right side who has a sore calf. FVBK’s serve receive started to decline towards the end of the set, and ÖVK was able to make a few extra plays winning 23-25.
Johan Eriksson was back on the court early in the second set to try to add stability back to the serve reception, but FVBK was unable to attack around ÖVK’s relentless defense, and stop Shun Imamura's tricky float serves. FVBK went down 13-17 and was never really able to recover. ÖVK won not only the set 19-25 but what seemed like all the momemtum going into the third set.
After the break FVBK came back out ready to fight. The volleyball wasn't always pretty both both teams battled hard for their points. The score remained close just like in the first set up until 21-21. However, this set ended to FVBK's favor with a Sebastian Angel ace, an out of rotation call to ÖVK, and then finally an ace from Jean Prado Silva. 25-23 and the match would live on!
That third set turned out to be the deciding set of the match. Silva continued his strong serving opening the fourth set. ÖVK quickly fell apart and went down as much as 11-4. FVBK took the opportunity and played with more confidence giving the crowd lots to be excited about: massive kills from Silva, tough serving from Fayez, and Madison receiving very well, not to mention a collective effort in block/defense. They easily won the set 25-10.
FVBK started the fifth set once again with a Silva serve series that led to 6-0. FVBK ran away with the score winning 15-8 and a 3-2 victory which was close to ending quite differently.
Both teams compete this weekend in Uppsala at the Grand Prix and have now had a chance to work off the holiday rust! On saturday FVBK meet Linköping in one semifinal while ÖVK take on Hylte/Halmstad in the other semifinal in what will no doubt be exciting match ups.
