Härlig vändning mot Sollentuna
17 feb 2018
FVBK played their fourth straight five set match in a row today and have now won the last three. It was clear as soon as one entered the hall that today's match meant a lot to both teams. Sollentuna handled the situation better early, but it was FVBK who finished stronger and turned a 0-2 deficit into a 3-2 victory!
Sollentuna 2 - 3 FVBK (25-15, 25-21, 21-25, 12-25, 9-15)
FVBK's serve reception was not at its best in the opening set. This meant that every other ball touch would need to be a great action, and we simply didn't manage to come up to that level in the other parts of the game. The points ran away quickly and the match could not have started off in a worse way. Sollentuna took the first set 25-15.
FVBK's reception took a step in the right direction in the second set, but it wasn't enough to get the team completely in rhythm. On top of that, Sollentuna's defense was picking up a good number of FVBK's good actions and winning the long rallies. Linus Tholse was a reliable attacking weapon for Sollentuna and after 2 sets had scored 14 points. The second set was closer but nevertheless FVBK went into the 10 minute break down 0-2.
The basis of the message in the locker room was that we had expected a long match versus Sollentuna, so it was now up to us now to make that happen. In the third set, Nils Åkerman came in for libero Edvin Swärd and right away took advantage of every opportunity he got. NIls and Edvin have really been pushing each other in practice and are a great example of how competition at a position not only improves the individuals but can raise the level of the TEAM. Nils was the best receiver on the court today delivering 53% perfect and 68% positive receptions. He stabilized our reception in general and gave FVBK's sideout game a chance to find some rhythm. Linus continued to pile on points for SVK, but the third set was dominated by Faeez Alloush who killed 10 of 14 balls in the third set alone! FVBK won the third set 25-21 and earned a chance to further extend the match.
The fourth set was a collapse from Sollentuna's side, a collapse that was initiated by great serving and blocking from FVBK. Faeez and Victor Nielsen had a couple effective serve series leading to 9 FVBK block points in the fourth set (Pedro - 4, Victor - 3). Lucas Candido also came to life with some impressive spike and block moves. FVBK grabbed the momentum completely winning the set 25-12, and were determined to take this energy into the decisive fifth set.
The last set was an extension of the fourth. Victor and Faeez continued to serve well. The rest of the guys put effort into the "small touches" giving everyone a clear role in moving the TEAM toward the victory, 15-9. If we could magically remove the first two sets of the match, it would have been a completely impressive victory over the fourth place team in the series. The reality however is that we have a lot of work to do in order to produce that level of play from the beginning of a match and especially when the opponent is pressuring us. We have several opportunities to get better at this already in the coming week. We have a tough away match on Thursday versus Örkelljunga and then meet Habo at home on Saturday. Be sure to come support FVBK as we battle our way towards the playoffs!
