Dramatic five set victory in Habo
31 jan 2018
FVBK travelled up to Habo on tuesday night knowing they had a challenge ahead of them. Habo is a team that has consistently been improving throughout the season, and who always plays FVBK tough on their home court. It took over 2 hours of hard work, but FVBK managed to come home with an important five set victory.
Habo 2 - 3 FVBK (22-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-22, 13-15)
In my opinion, the fans who witnessed the match live got to see an exciting volleyball match. Both teams maintained a very high hitting percentage, both teams made big plays and the match was decided by the smallest of margins in the fifth set. I would also think that both coaching staffs should be pleased with the match (even if I understand that it is hard to be pleased with a loss). My feeling is that all players were pushing in one common direction for their respective team. It sounds strange to say, but that is rarely the case.
I am impressed with Habo. Jackson Maris is a setter of class but also seems to be managing his dual roles of player coach in an effective manner. He is no doubt getting help from a willing team and supportive elite staff. Adnan Herco is in amazing form right now. He has clearly worked himself back into physical shape throughout the season. It seems his years of experience plus the time away from volleyball has added another dimension to his attacking game.
From an FVBK perspective, I thought everyone played very well and we had a supportive bench. This doesn't mean we can't play better or that individuals can't step up even more, but it was clearly the best TEAM effort we've seen in 2018. And we definitely needed every single contribution from every member of the team to win this very close match.
Player of the game Daniel Gruvaeus played his best match of the season with 13 attacks, 2 blocks and 4 aces. Other standout numbers include our middles together killing 13 of 16 balls and opposite Lucas Candido again proving himself as a reliable scorer with a total of 25 points. Johan Gruvaeus had 3 blocks on the night with 2 of them coming after 11 in the fifth set against Adnan Herco, including the match ball. We will need to continue working this hard with this type of mentality over the next 6 weeks in order to properly position ourselves for an exciting playoff run.
