Otippad seger mot ÖVK!
15 okt 2017
FVBK took an unexpected 3 points tonight versus topptippade Örkelljunga VK in the first away match of the season. It was a true TEAM effort that carried the young team through four hard-fought sets.
ÖVK 1 - 3 FVBK (25-21, 21-25, 18-25, 20-25)
The play in the first set was a bit uneven from both sides. ÖVK missed a few more serves than Coach Svante probably would like, while FVBK missed a few more balls in both serve and attack than I would prefer. The result in any case was that the lead changed sides a couple times with the score being close up until 21-20. A float ace from ÖVK center Mike Choja and two attacking errors gave ÖVK the first set 25-21.
The young FVBK team was not discouraged however. The gang stuck to the gameplan and now started to convert on transition opportunities. Block also started to collect some 'easy' points with Victor Nielsen and Pedro Mendes getting two kill blocks each in this set. FVBK dropped a few points in a row after 20, but had built up a comfortable enough lead to win 25-21. Tomas Vilimas was the only consistent scorer for ÖVK at this stage with 10 points going into the break.
The third set started in the best possible way for FVBK. After a serve miss from ÖVK, Victor went on a serve run up to 6-0. The stress on the home team was evident in reception as well as other parts of the game. FVBK did a good job of seizing the moment and pushed the lead to as much as 20-8. There were a handful of sloppy actions allowing ÖVK to clean up the score a bit, but a Pedro block ended ÖVK's momentum 25-18.
The fourth set would be the most well played of the match. Both teams combined, hit the ball out only twice, were blocked twice and made only 5 service errors. The fans got to see clean sideout volleyball where FVBK led most of the set by 1-2 points. Johan Gruvaeus (19 points total) stepped up here killing 7 out of 8 attacks, giving his team the consistent attacking option that would be needed to beat ÖVK on their home court. The last points of the match were on 2 Gruvaeus attacks (one by Johan and the other by brother Daniel), and then a Victor block on match ball!
I have learned over the years that any win in Örkelljunga should be appreciated. This very early-season victory indicates that the team's development is going in the right direction and will hopefully motivate us to connect even more with our TEAM concepts. It must be noted that in the last 3 sets Pedro was the only player on the court over the age of 20. Remaining humble and hungry regardless of the results is one of these concepts that will now be tested. Luckily there are plenty of challenges around the corner, a new away match on tuesday versus Lund and Hylte/Halmstad at home on sunday October 22nd!
