FVBK klar för NCC Final Four
20 nov 2016
With today's exciting 3-1 victory, FVBK qualified for the NEVZA Club Championships Final Four for the fifth year in a row. Both FVBK and home team Marienlyst (Denmark) won their first two matches with 3-0 over NTNUI (Norway) and Middelfart (Denmark). Only 1 ticket to the Final Four was up for grabs, giving this match an intensity that we normally have to wait for the Grand Prix or SM-Slutspel to experience.
FVBK 3 - 1 Marienlyst (22-25, 25-20, 29-27, 25-18)
The match did not start the way we had planned. FVBK struggled to find any stability in their play, while Marienlyst led by former FVBKare Simon Bitsch succeeded with everything. Marienlyst quickly jumped out to a 10-2 lead. Things were not looking good until Jean Prado Silva kick started his team with a fantastic serve series. He consistently put Marienlyst under pressure allowing FVBK's block to cash in a few quick points (6 total in the first set). The lead was reduced to 16-13 and FVBK felt like they could play volleyball once again. The score would be tied by 18-18 but a few untimely mistakes after 20 allowed Marienlyst to save the first set 25-22.
FVBK took the energy from almost stealing the first set into the next and was determined to tie the match. Serve pressure continued and at this point spikers Jean Prado Silva and Madison Hayden were getting hot. Both took a huge responsibility in converting FVBK's transition opportunities into break points. Setter Victor Nielsen also did a great job of creating an effective rhythm in FVBK's sideout play. Silva was named player of the match with 24 points, while Madison nearly matched him with 22. Also noteworthy were Pedro Mendes' 15 points and David Åkerman's 5 block points.
The important third set would end up being the deciding set in the match. Marienlyst took an early two point lead which they managed to hold up to 21-19. Both teams played great sideout volleyball through long periods. Despite being under FVBK played with an aggressive attitude and were clearly hunting opportunities to take over the initiative. Those chances came after 20 points, as they so often do. FVBK was able to tie the score at 22 and then also fought off a few Marienlyst set balls before taking the set 29-27!
The fourth set started evenly with Marienlyst leading at 8-7, but FVBK's consistency seemed to wear down the home team. By 16-14 the lead had shifted to FVBK who never gave it up again. 25-18 and a ticket to the NCC Final Four was secured.
The weekend in Odense can be summarized as a success. The results obviously speak to that fact. More importantly, the team approached the weekend with the right mentality. We could then gain much needed experience that only comes by focussing purely on volleyball and quality competition. The challenge now will be to continue building on this experience as we return to the reality of daily life.

I would also like to send our appreciation to Boldklubben Marienlyst who did a fantastic job organizing the weekend's tournament, accomodations, food, etc.
